Through sculptural practice I explore visual cues of body languages. Social codes that exist outside use of the spoken word. I am interested in the physical mimicry from viewer, a sort of subconscious replication, a trigger of empathetic responses. I'm curious about emotionally charged atmosphere’s, more specifically, the study of individualized postures, facial expressions and hand gestures as a vehicle for conversation.
Support Work for individuals within the community plays in tandem with my sculptural research. I am fascinated by the intricacies of posture and facial expression as either intentional or subconscious dictation. Translating communicative traits through clay allows me to explore the nuances of emotion and personhood. Social and cultural conditioning influences appearance of our physical selves, and thus my work is constantly provided with fresh insight. These audibly silent cues, loaded with information about our communication process as a species, are the crux in which I develop my work. Ultimately my practice aims to explore the permeability between our external and internal selves: both the barriers to expression, as well as the apertures through which ideas pass fluidly, rendering inside and outside indistinguishable.
